Changing a Job, What are the criteria to be considered?
Mostly we see that people leave their jobs when they arrive at any unforeseen circumstances whereby they are left with no other options than to quit their job.
In modern times, this shouldn't be the case, as it implies to the fact that individuals remain comfortable getting adapted to all those circumstances that actually should have been taken as indicators of what may come & eventually push one off the cliff, leave their jobs, either without having any other suitable job or settling for any available job.
Any new professional profile, irrespective of their hierarchy in the system, may take nothing less than 3 to 6 months to settle in & start creating value from the desk. Hence one must take at least 1000 working days as a benchmark for carrying out their own job evaluation.
Ask the following questions to yourself after you have completed working for at least 1000 days in that very organization, there are 5 Basic criteria, with at least 4 questions in each of these criteria, making it about 20 questions, if at all you are still able to add some other questions to these Basic criteria, please do so, as this is self evaluation & not for others to know and try to answer all of them in YES or NO:
Q 1) Are you valuable?
A) Valuable means, are your suggestions, ideas, inputs & dedication at a level whereby they have become an essential part of the process you are involved in getting the end results for the business objectives? Are your self initiatives to bring about improvement & changes in the interest of Organizations appreciated?
B) This does not mean that every operation or function around your profile is tied down to you, rather it is the opposite of the same, are your skills of delegating tasks & assignment & follow through are so excellently managed that you have become dependable & most reliable asset for the organization?
C) Every individual, while they are able to earn value for their work, skills & dedication, they do carry some personal virtues & values through their nurturing & experiences in life, that eventually makes them who they are & where they are heading, are you able to practice those values or have to keep compromising on them?
D) Is your work & your value at your workplace able to earn you respect amongst your family members & friends?
Q 2) Are you growing?
A) As inquisitive as we are, even if one is not striving or making deliberate efforts to learn new skills or traits, just by making effort diligently to complete tasks & job, one can learn & improve with whatever they are doing, least to talk about those who are in a quest to make efforts in investing their time & resources to learn some new & better things. Does your work profile, workplace & organizational environment give you that space & opportunity to learn new things or get better?
B) Do your daily tasks, activities & interactions with other colleagues help you to shape up into a better version of yourself? Are you able to become more calm, composed & mature in your dispositions while handling pressure & yet are able to deliver excellent results, consistently?
C) Has your ability to adapt & learn on your own, change your perceptions & improvise in your deliverables been identified by your Management, acknowledged by your immediate seniors & appreciated by your fellow team members?
D) Go back to 1000 days & ask yourself, how were you thinking, reasoning & acting on the same matters & issues then? Are you now able to see yourself practicing more humility with compassion in the things you do?
Q 3) Is the Organization growing?
A) It is not rocket science to realize that every individual's growth is directly proportional to the growth of the organization that they are working for. Has the turnover, sales & market share of the product or services that your organization is offering improved and multiplied in the past 1000 days? How many percent?
B) Is the product or the service being offered, being reviewed, upgraded, modified, made better, will you buy it or recommend it to your family & friends over all other similar products or services being offered by the competitors?
C) Is your organization having any expansion or diversification plans in the pipeline, that might give you better options to learn & grow by being offered new responsibilities or profiles?
D) Is the working environment of the organization or workplace getting better than how it was before 1000 days? Are the interpersonal concerns & issues handled maturely & in time by your seniors & colleagues? Are you enjoying working along with your team members, helping them & being helped to achieve tasks & targets? Are being accepted & able to accept the working team members as close allies?
Q 4) Is your salary justified?
A) Contrary to the popular belief that everyone wants to be rich, we are living our life to make it more comfortable, with the help of means & material, we bring about a feel of gratification as & when we progress in acquiring more comfort for ourselves & our loved ones & that is our RIGHT as a human being. So practically no amount of money that we are earning or making may ever prove to be sufficient & hence a fair justification via self evaluation can help to understand if what we are earning is fair enough or not?
B) We have to break down our requirements into basic needs to support our existing lifestyle & then review it with progress. Is your salary able to pay for daily meals, energy bills, take care of medical emergencies, pay school & tuition fees on time? Are you able to save enough with your salary after having invested with proper planning on acquiring durables, vehicles & a house? Are you able to afford spending on entertainment for yourself & your loved ones?
C) Professionals have their set of experience backed by the qualifications, check on the job offering portals, what is the salary being offered for similar experience & qualifications, is it 20% more than what you are earning? if possible try to compare your own earnings with someone you know has similar experience & qualification? Check within your organization if there are any examples whereby someone has grown exponentially in their pay package?
D) Time to time, do not hesitate to appear for an interview, as that may not only give you a fair idea on where you stand in your intellect & skills it may also give a very accurate understanding on how much is your worth in the open market. Making a judgement on what is a right salary is altogether a different subject, but as long as your salary is growing at the rate of inflation, or little above it helping you to make slow but steady progress it is not bad. Is your present salary helping you to maintain your lifestyle & standard of living or you are already making more compromises on your needs, & that inflation is already affecting it all?
Q 5) Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
A) Professionals within their own understanding will always have plans for their future, not necessarily written down, but they do know what salary, position, & comfort level they may want to be in the next 5 years. Do you see your overall growth heading in the direction of your goals & objectives?
B) Every business or organization is working collectively to multiply the investments made by the investors, & it is obvious that all of those who are involved in helping achieve this objective are contributors of growth, irrespective of every adversities in socio-economic scenario, even if any business is doing well do maintain their profitability by meeting the inflation, than it means that they are practically growing by 8 to 10%, not to mention about some business or services that may have even grown & expanded in their turnovers during the same period when there are all adverse socio-economic factors plays around, so are your also able to see the same balance in your vision & plans? Are you able to meet or beat the inflation & continue to grow financially as well as intellectually?
C) The department, section & profile that you are working has a direct impact on long term goals, if you are working in a profile where too many assignments are processed but accountability level & challenges are least, then in that case there might be a need to review the profile. Is your present work profile in alignment with your 5 year projection? Are you able to add new skills, find time to learn new techniques, practice trial & error, i.e. learning from failure, attend some training sessions, participate in debates?
D) Are you constructively able to carry out the risk assessment of your own profile, comparing it to those other profiles that you can consider taking up? At times we are in so much love with what we do, little do we realize that the profile may actually not mean a lot if there are some critical changes in the structure of the organization, as much as the financial growth is important for achieving long term goals, stability is even more critical to be maintained in order to achieve those goals. Are you working on a profile that is important & critical in the system & that it is not easily replaceable?
Try to answer in YES or NO for each of these 20 questions from 5 criteria.
If someone may end up having NO as their answer for 10 or more questions that know that after having worked for over 1000 days, they have eventually become more comfortable with where they have given those 10 YES, but know that this also means that they are already standing very close to the edge of the cliff, within no time the 10 NOs will become 12 & 14, replacing the initial 10 YES with which they were comfortable & were ready to compromise & let go the other 10 NOs. It will be just a matter of time one may have to jump off the cliff edge or will be pushed off.
And if the YES is there for more than 15 questions/criteria than consider yourself to be very fortunate, as the remaining 5 can become YES as your celebrate & rejoice in the 15 YES you already have.
All these proposed or assumed conditions may look like fairytale stories, but they are from this very world & very much desirable, it may be true that who & where will someone find all these 20 criteria meeting up, but expecting them to be met is not asking for too much, also do not forget that while you are working with your skills & dedication, your resilience to let go those 10 NOs. is also an agreement that you are ready to compromise on the remaining 10 that were still YES.
There are Organizations, profiles & opportunities that have stood the test of time & have been practicing philanthropic approach that do strive to get close in obtaining YES on as many possible criteria.
